So, I have actually a Lenovo Ideapad u530 touch native 2014. Its initial charger is long gone and was replaced with an extremely crappy chinese one which, follow to mine brother`s calculations, has actually 65W pottency.

You are watching: Can i use a 45 watt charger on a 65 watt laptop

This thing is therefore crappy that it literally charges slower 보다 the computer spends energy while playing a game, i m sorry made my last couple of months the gaming a hell.

One day, I decided to shot my dad's charger. It's gained 45W and also is native his work TP.

Man, was i amazed. That small 45W thing operated WONDERS. I can finally operation my notebook every day ~ above high performace settings.

So I quickly searched virtual store approximately here in search of a 45W charger. All i can uncover are 65W and also above. Room they better? Or worse? Or overkill? will certainly I it is in fine acquiring a 65W one?

If it was a crappy chinese one opportunities are the 65 watt thing was bullshit. As long as you buy chargers from reputable sources and brands girlfriend will view satisfying results. And dont buy a 65 watt charger if her battery ~ no designed for that. Just becuase that charges much faster dosent median its not damaging your battery

First you require to understand what your original charger had. Voltage and Watts. The brand-new charger needs to enhance the calculation voltage and have the exact same or higher watts. Not correct voltage deserve to mean dead PC/battery.

The computer will attract what it needs in regards to watts. Having an ext watts won't perform anything. Having actually lower watts can make it try to draw more than the charger can handle and also the charger can catch fire.

First you need to understand what your initial charger had. Voltage and also Watts.

Voltage and ampere is what you need. Watt is the result of volt multiply by amp.

12V x 3.75A = 45W12V x 5.42A = 65W

You deserve to use chargers with lower watt ratings as the initial one as long as the volt matches; the battery will just charge slower or even drainpipe while plugged in if the computer is under heavy load and the charger can't sustain that load.

Are the adapters the same voltage?

There's a tiny to large chance the the cheap adapter you have just isn't providing as lot power as it claims. If you have something like a kill-a-watt you deserve to measure the really power attract of the charger. Also better, yet a bit more work, is to put an ammeter top top the DC output side(between the adapter and the laptop) and measure exactly how much DC existing the laptop is drawing.

So, there's part rubish and also some kind comments here, but really likely the factor the 65 watt charger is much worse 보다 the 45 watt charger is the lack of one-wire to know chip. The laptop communicates v a chip within the charger to discover out which version it is (45-180 watt for Lenovo chargers). If that can't discover the chip, or the charger is too little for the laptop version you're using, then the laptop will switch come a really low power safe charging mode. Friend should get a real Lenovo 45 watt charger for your laptop for this reason it have the right to charge at complete speed.

Using a charger v the incorrect watt usage can shorten the battery life the the laptop as soon as it's no plugged in it's good idea to keep using a 65w charger because that the laptop. Yes it chargers slower, however you have the right to keep the laptop life span going due to the fact that it's about to struggle 5 year which is the usual life span of laptops keep that young running..

But the "charger" isn't actually controlling the charging of the battery - the is simply supplying strength to the charging circuit inside the laptop the is in reality charging the battery. You have the right to use a 500 watt power adapter, and also the charger is only going to draw as much as it requirements to charge. If the charging circuitry is dependency on the supply present being under a certain point then that is past fucked.

If the 45W has more Amps climate the 65W climate it will job-related better. Also you may uncover the crappy 65W probably has an issue and also may no be placing out enough Watts or Amps.

Tho you should go to Lenovo and find the Charger Specs and also get a charger that matches it.

To poor ether of those 2 fees wouldn't fee my laptop while that is gift used, mine needs a 230W
9.23 amps. Uncovered that out the hard way when mine cars DC jack inverter would shutoff when I rotate laptop on.
