The dealership is putting all new lifters in my vvt 5.7, so naturally that means the heads are coming off. They showed me the parts they ordered and all they ordered was a gasket kit and the lifters. When i asked why they werent replacing the head bolts the service manager said that the service manual doesnt call for even an inspection of the headbolts. So are the head bolts torque to yield or not? And if they are, then what literature can i show the service manager that they need to get replaced?

They definitly are. The torque specs tells it all. Sounds to me like he is trying to keep his warranity cost per repair numbers down.

So what exactly do i tell them in order to get them to replace the head bolts? Something tells me just saying to look at the torque specs isnt going to work. Is there something that says this in black and white?

This is what is in the service manual for the 2006 5.7. 40 ft lbs is nowhere near the yield strength for the M12 bolts and I doubt very much your heads are any different. Tighten the cylinder head bolts in three steps usingthe sequence provided : Step 1 Snug tighten M12 cylinder head bolts,in sequence, to 34 Nm (25 ft. lbs.) and M8 boltsto 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.) torque. Step 2 Tighten M12 cylinder head bolts, insequence, to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.) and verify M8bolts to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.) torque.. Step 3 Turn M12 cylinder head bolts, insequence, 90 degrees and tighten M8 bolts to 34Nm (25 ft. lbs.) torque.

If it was me and they do not know by looking at the specs then I would not be letting them work on my car. I would find another dealer. They can also call the master tech hot line and get the info.

M8 bolts to 34Nm (25 ft. lbs.) torque.
You"re right that 40ftlbs is no where near enough to yield the bolt, but that extra 90 degree turn takes them to a tad over a 100ftlbs which is enough to yield the bolt. OP, they are TTY and they do need to be replaced. Not always will they yield and when then do it can be verified, but that"s another story.

The service manuals for 06 and 07 make no mention of replacing head bolts. I reused the bolts on my 07 with no incident & replaced the bolts on my 06 - believe they ran me about $50.00 from rockauto. If it bugs you that much, pony up for new head bolts. It certainly won"t break the bank.

Actually there is an entire page in the manual that explain how to test if the TTY bolts stretched. Honestly I am not going to sit here looking for it but let me ask you this? Are you a big enough tightwad to risk a blown head gasket on a $20 set of head bolts when it"s all apart anyway?
EDIT: ^^^^^^This is not directed at any one person....just a blanket statement

They"re actually 65 from the dealership, which still isnt all that expensive but that isnt the point. I want dodge to pay for it under warrantee because it isnt my fault that i needed all new lifters on a completely stock motor with only 19k on the clock(I"ve been hearing a lifter tick since 10k but the dealer didnt believe me til now).

They are not $65 unless your dealer is ripping you off. Also only the m12"s are TTY. And from what you said it looked like only one head was off.

I said it once and I will say it again. If they want to charge you $65.00 for bolts then you need to find a different dealer.

So let me try to understand, the service Manual doesn"t say that these bolts are a one time use. so has there been problems with head bolts breaking/ also what is the head markings on the head of the bolts, I haven"t removed my heads yet but I was curious I know the M8 has 9.8 stamped on them what does the M12 have stamped on them....

The service manuel does not tell you to put oil in the motor before starting it either but I would recommend it. lol
